List of Universities in India

To promote higher education among the student’s community, there are state, central, and deemed universities in India. Most of these institutions are recognized by the University Grants Commission (UGC) and managed by the state & central governments. It offers different academic courses in streams such as engineering, medical, law, and much more.

As per the UGC data of March 31st, 2021, there are about 979 Universities in India – 425 State Universities, 125 Deemed to be Universities, 54 Central Universities, and 375 Private Universities.

The Ministry of Human Resource Development (MHRD) is responsible for overseeing the operation of all the Universities through its chief governing body-University Grants Commission (UGC). Other government organizations that contribute towards making strong the roots of Indian education include the All India Council for Technical Education (AICTE) and the National Assessment and Accreditation Council (NAAC).
